Reggae Reggae Sauce
22 March 2007
Today, 6 students from 8f interviewed a special man called Levi Roots.
Many people might know Levi Roots for his talented and tasty hot pepper sauce, but before he became a hot pepper sauce maker he was dedicated to his music.
When we were with Levi we asked him some personal questions, such as where he was born. His response was that he was in born in Clarindan, Jamaica and then he came to England when aged 12 years old.
We then asked him who his inspiration was when he was younger. His response, was that he didn’t really have a favourite inspiration, because he grow up with lots of famous people but out of all the famous people he grew up with his biggest inspiration was Bob Marley.
Levi said that his favourite team was Arsenal. We then asked him what his next step in life was; he said that he hopes to earn a lot of money so he can build a music studio for youths to learn more about music.
We then asked him if he was frightened when he was being interviewed by the Dragons Den. He said that he was a bit scared, but he imagined that he was just about to perform in front of 30,000 people playing his hot pepper sauce jingle.
Finally we asked him to play one of his hot pepper sauce songs which we really enjoyed; the six of us thought he was a very nice and generous man. We really enjoyed his company.

Xbox live accounts ‘not hacked’
22 March 2007
The good thing about not having your system hacked into is the fact that you can have all the privacy you will want and need. However, although more than 50 people have now complained that they have had their Xbox live systems hacked into, evidence is here to prove that this is not likely to be true.
Gamers have complained that they have had their gaming systems hacked in to and they do not like it and want Microsoft to do everything they can to stop it from happening to other people. The interview we have here with an Xbox player states that most people have their Xbox connected to the internet that is why people are able to hack into their system, so if they do not have their Xbox connected to the internet they will not be able to hack into it but that still does not make it right .
The problem came to light after security researcher Kevin Finisterre reported his experience of a problem first-hand on his website.
In a statement Microsoft said it found no evidence of any compromise of the security of Xbox live. But Kevin has now found clans (gaming groups) boasting about stealing other peoples accounts and they are proud of it. Shame on them and when they are caught they should be punished severely by the law.
Kevin is quoted on the BBC news website saying that, “one of the posts said they were not stealing the person’s account details but they had been given to him by the Xbox live support team.” A Microsoft spokesman told the BBC that “rumours about accounts being hijacked are false.”
In a statement, Microsoft said, “There have been a few isolated incidents where malicious users have been attempting to draw personal information from unsuspecting users and use it to gain access to their live account. We think this is a good time to remind our members that they should never give out any of their personal information to anyone who they do not know or may be acting suspicious even your friends.”
Kevin, who started a website in January this year and revealed a new bug in apple systems each day for a month, said he believed that somebody had managed to hack into his account. “On Thursday last week I was playing Halo (an Xbox game) and he said he was going to steal my account” he told the BBC website.
He didn’t know who, but he had a mind to find out but didn’t know how to, so we do not know what he will decide to do.

Anorexia and obesity
22 March 2007
Jamie Oliver has been working for many different schools in the community, helping kids be healthier. One of the big concerns is obesity but another big concern is anorexia.
Why are young girls becoming anorexic? Some say is because of the influence of models and celebrities. This can lead to anorexia because young people are following their footsteps which might lead them to lose too much weight.
The positive image of girl at this age will be not starving herself but keeping in good shape. They can do this is by keeping a low fat diet but eating at times and not skipping breakfast which is the most important meal of the day.
Also the concentration of young kids decreases if they eat junk food but if they eat healthy food the concentration of young kids will increase at school which the teachers will be thankful for.
We interviewed some girls at Charles Edward Brooke for their opinions: Shanice said, “The bad thing about being anorexic is that you don’t have no shape or figure… the good thing about anorexic is you can find anything to wear when going out to special occasions’’.
Aneta said, ‘’ Well first of all I would like to say that children in England (UK) should be eating healthy foods than rather eating junk food getting them into anorexia and obesity and also to death!’’
A big concern regarding obesity is that young kids 8-15 will find food as an entertainment which will then cause problems. Obesity can lead to heart failure, diabetes and death.
Angela said, “The bad thing about being obese is you can’t run and will slow your heart down… the good thing about obesity is you can be lazy and just lay around’’

Sauce man reveals his dream
22 March 2007
“Reggae artist and sauce man” Levi Roots has revealed his dream to help other musicians in Brixton.
Levi has become famous by creating a sauce “Reggae Reggae Sauce” and appearing on the television show, Dragon’s Den.
On Thursday 22nd of March, 8F was very lucky to meet Levi.
He told us that he wants to set up a recording studio in the future, so young ones can learn music as well and maybe one day they’ll become famous reggae artists as well.
Levi was born in Jamaica but came to live in Brixton, South London.
Bob Marley was his inspiration and was a good friend to Levi and said he played football with him in Battersea Park.
Levi became a reggae artist but as he got older, he decided to give up music entirely and become a sauce man.
‘Reggae Reggae sauce’ is being sold in 600 different Sainsbury shops nationwide.
He also has a shop in Battersea selling his famous sauce and other Jamaican food.
Levi also says he wants to get back to music and make more records.
Unveiling the Issue
22 March 2007
A new uniforms guidance has been issued by ministers which gives schools the power to ban full-face veils. With Britain’s Muslim community growing, there are more Muslim children in schools who will be affected by this.
Girls wearing veils at school has caused some controversy in recent times with one student taking her school to court to fight for her rights.
There are many conflicting opinions surrounding this issue, on the one hand you have complaints from teachers that they are unable to communicate with students as well as general health and safety issues. On the other side are those Muslim girls who feel they have had their freedom of choice taken away from them. Nafeesah a Muslim pupil who attends Charles Edward Brooke School tells us:
“I don’t understand why they are going against my religion. If they were in my country and we went against their religion, they wouldn’t like it.”
This problem has already been solved in France the French government passed a law which stated that children at school were not allowed to wear niqabs, hijabs, veils, crosses, turbans and any other religious items.
Veils outside of school have also become an issue. Last year MP Jack Straw famously made some controversial comments about women wearing the veil after conducting an interview with a woman wear wearing a veil. He claimed that he felt very uncomfortable throughout the interview and that the veil is a statement of separation and difference.
Although full-face veils have been banned, the Hijabs are allowed to be worn at school as the student’s face is visible when these are worn.
Submarine Blast
22 March 2007
Two British sailors were killed on board a submarine by emergency oxygen device.
The nuclear powered HMS Tireless was under the Arctic icecap on its way too the North Pole when an oxygen generator exploded and fumes filled the compartment where the two sailors were working.
A third sailor was taken to hospital and is expected to recover fully.
A while after the explosion, the submarine submerged so the fumes could escape.
The US navy said the fumes had no other impact on any equipment.
The Ministry of Defence last night said:
“Their next of kin have been informed. One submariner was also injured. He was airlifted to a US military hospital, where he remains. His injuries are not life-threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery. “
Football Racism
22 March 2007
Rio Ferdinand has told how racism seriously effected his childhood and wants to stop it hitting others.
The Manchester United and England defender said that he experienced racist abuse both at school and in football, as a player and a supporter.
Now he is acting as an ambassador for the Kick It Out campaign designed to get rid of racism in the sport.
Rio, 28, was a pupil at the same school as Stephen Lawrence the black teenager killed in a racist murder.
He also lived near the South London estate where 10-year-old Damilola Taylor was killed.
Rio said he hoped that the campaign would challenge racism both on and off the field.
In 2002, he told the BBC that however bad racism got, it would be wrong to walk off the field in protest.
“Then you are letting the racists win,” he said.
Slavery Shame
22 March 2007
A child that was a slave said that he worked everyday and he had no choice because he was brought by a trafficker from Benin. His parents didn’t have any money to look after him. The boy felt so lonely and he can’t believe that his parents sold him. All young children were sold for £10 by their parents. I think parents that sell their children are disgusting.
The children had to work so hard in the flaming sun and their bodies are full of burn marks.
Alice and 24 others had to sleep on a rug in a leaking canoe and the only food they had to eat was dry flour. Sometimes they were force into prostitution.
A nine year old girl called Afi was a domestic servant. She worked 10 hours a day and if Afi finished she would be hit by a shoe and she was so hungry. But luckily she was saved by a centre in Cotonou where they care for more than 400 abused and homeless children.
Britney Gone Bald
22 March 2007
Britney Spears is said to be feeling much better recently after getting help at a special clinic in America where she was in rehab.
The pop star checked herself into the Promise Treatment Centre last month after she shocked her family and fans with her recent behaviour which included shaving all her hair off.
We asked some teenagers at Charles Edward Brooke to see what they think about Britney’s new shiny head.
One said: “I think she did that because she had too many problems in her head and she did that because she has no idea what to do at the moment.”
Who do you think her child is with and will she stay with them? “I think her child is with the father and yes I think she can stay with them because she’s a pop star.”
Another said: “I think that it will be Justin Timberlake will help her recover because he used to go out with her.”
What do you think Britney’s ex-husband will do for her? “I think he won’t do anything for her.”
What do you think Britney will say when she looks back on this? “Well, I think that she will just say that she was going through a lot of things and she’ll regret looking ridiculous.”
What we learn from this story is that there is a downside to fame.

21st Century Slavery
22 March 2007
The Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade anniversary is around the corner.
In some parts of the world, like Asia, the Caribbean, and some African countries, especially in Benin, children from the age of five suffer Child labour. Children are often subjected to hard labour for up to twelve hours a day.
Many schools learn about the abolition of the slave trade, and how black slaves were treated unfairly. However, in some schools black history is not being taught. Children in England want to hear slavery has gone so they can live a life of peace.
